Background finished. Time to build up further texture and add the leaves.
I tried several methods to produce leaves that could be applied as separate items:
- free machining wool fibres through soluble stablisher
- needle-punching fibres onto soluble stabliser
- free machining onto existing felt scraps or half felt.
All of these methods produced the effect that I wanted. All of the wool fibres used had been hand dyed with acid dyes in a microwave oven.
The biggest leaves were attached to the bottom of the piece as they were further forward. Dyed scrim was frayed and zig-zagged onto the background for the branches and leaves added. A lot of free-machining was needed in the background to build up texture, and included the addition of small pieces of felt.
Hand sewn french knot buttercups were added, along with free machined stems and twigs.
Still not sure about the leaves at the top - they look a little too heavy. Will look at it with fresh eyes after my next project but any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
